Fort Cape Spear (WW ll)

There were three 10" guns here to cover the approach to St John's harbour. They were mounted on hydraulic systems that allowed them to drop down out of sight. In addition a curved rail system permitted them to swivel through a wide range. Only two of the guns and the empty bunkers remain.

Behind the guns was a long bunker holding accommodation for the gun crews and storage for the munitions.

It was abandoned in 1945 near the end of the war.
